In the 18th and early 19th Century, the Trucial coast (south-eastern Persian Gulf) was known in the West as the ‘Pirate Coast’ as shipping vessels in the area were frequently targeted by local tribal inhabitants. The Sheikhdoms also known as the Trucial States were formerly a British Protectorate from 1820 until they achieved independence in 1971. The following year Ras al-Khaymah joined the federation. The United Arab Emirates was formed as an independent federation on December 2nd, 1971 and originally included six countries: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah.
